Prof. Kanyeihamba’s Life and Service Preserved in New Publication

The First Deputy Katikkiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda and Minister for Administration and Information Communications Technology (ICT), Prof. Twaha Kaawaase Kigongo, has launched a new book titled “Under the Wings of Prof. Dr. G.W Kanyeihamba”, authored by his former aide, Alex Wavamunno.

Prof. Kaawaase attended the function on the invitation of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, and was accompanied by the Buganda Attorney General, Christopher Bwanika.

Speaking at the launch, Prof. Kaawaase described Prof. Kanyeihamba as a man who deeply loved Kabaka Mutebi II and strongly supported the Buganda Kingdom.

“As the Kingdom of Buganda we are delighted to be here today at the launch of this book, ‘Under the Wings of Prof. Dr. G.W Kanyeihamba’,” he said, noting that the book is well written and reflects the life and experiences of the late jurist as captured by Counsel Alex Wavamunno.

He emphasized that the book serves as an important reminder of Prof. Kanyeihamba, whom he described as one of Uganda’s great “lions,” a distinguished lawyer, writer, and patriot who loved Uganda deeply.

Prof. Kaawaase further stated that Prof. Kanyeihamba consistently supported the Kabaka and the Buganda Kingdom in many ways and will be remembered as a powerful legal mind and a lion of the legal profession.

He thanked Alex Wavamunno for documenting his experiences with Prof. Kanyeihamba, noting that the book preserves the legacy of a man he worked closely with for many years.

Prof. Kaawaase also appreciated Chapter Seven of the book, which highlights the relationship between Prof. Kanyeihamba and Kabaka Mutebi II, thanking the author for the detailed account.

He further commended the title of the book, stating that Prof. Kanyeihamba was a giant figure whose influence impacted many lives. He added that although he has passed on, his legacy continues through works such as this, and through individuals like Wavamunno who continue to document his life.

Former Busiro East Member of Parliament Medard Lubega Ssegona, who attended the event, said the book highlights the importance of self-belief and commended the author for documenting the life of the late Prof. Kanyeihamba so that others may learn from it.

He also praised Wavamunno for beginning to write books at a young age and encouraged young lawyers to learn from Prof. Kanyeihamba, engage in research, and remain courageous in all circumstances.

The author of the book and former aide to Prof. Kanyeihamba, Alex Wavamunno, said the publication contains many lessons and experiences from the late professor, including issues related to bail rights and other legal matters that the public can benefit from.

He emphasized the importance of acting in accordance with the law and said he was compelled to write the book because Prof. Kanyeihamba raised him and guided him throughout his life while also serving the nation.

“The late professor played a major role in shaping my life and left a lasting influence on both me and the country,” he said.

Born on August 11, 1939, in Kinkizi County, now Kanungu District, Justice George Wilson Kanyeihamba passed away on July 14, 2025, at the age of 85.

He served as a Member of the National Resistance Council (1986–1996), Minister of Justice and Attorney General (1989–1991), and was a key figure in the drafting of the 1995 Constitution, where he chaired the Legal and Drafting Committee.

From 1997 to 2009, he served as a Justice of the Supreme Court and was later appointed a pioneer judge at the African Court on Human and People’s Rights (2006–2008).

He also served as the first Presidential Advisor on Human Rights from 1995 to 1999.

Justice Kanyeihamba made significant contributions to academia. He lectured at Makerere University (1990–1998) and Uganda Christian University (2003–2010).

He also served as the founding Chancellor of Kabale University and Kampala International University, and played a leading role in transitioning Kabale University into a public institution.

He was laid to rest on Monday, July 29, 2025 at his home in Buziga, Makindye Division, Kampala.
